Winemaking and Analysis
• Riesling is a single varietal wine, and is considered one of the Noble vinifera varietals… to many, the most revered of the white winemaking grapes
• Skin Contact whites, or “Orange Wines” undertake a process very similar to red wine production, where the grapes themselves are vinified on their own skins before being gently pressed. This extracts amazing colours, unique phenolics, and uncharted mouthfeel for skin-contact white wines, placing them in a category unto themselves.
• 100% sourced from our Avonport Vineyard
• Grapes were cold soaked on their own skins for 24 hours, 50% whole berry, 50% crushed. Spontaneous fermentation followed, including partial Carbonic Maceration
• Total skin contact continued for 17 days throughout the primary fermentation, before being gently pressed at 1.2 bars
• Transferred into stainless steel to limit the exposure to oxygen, the wine matured uninterrupted with no sulfur additions, for 18 months before bottling
• A truly unique small lot wine, displaying a special wild side of the Riesling grape
• Only 145 cases produced in 2022
• GRAPES: 100% Riesling, from the Avonport Vineyard
• APPEARANCE: Unique colour structure, tiger-stripe orange with deep apricot hues
• AROMATICS: Unique spicy and white pepper aromatics, opens to fresh herbs, lemon rind, and notes of sweetgrass
• TASTE: Complex tannic structure gives over to orange pekoe and chamomile tea flavours, coupled with subtle honey and ginger. An intense mouthfeel with a very long finish follows
• TREATMENT: 17 days spent fermenting on the skins; 50/50% whole berry and gentle crushed fruit. Cold and slow fermentation, followed by uninterrupted 18-month stainless steel maturation with minimal intervention.
• SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Enjoy chilled with fragrant dishes, strong cheeses and mixed charcuterie
• AGING: Drinking well now, or cellar through until 2035
